about

hi! we’re katie, jessica + shannon. three women who met in a support group for families of those with substance use disorders. every wednesday night we’d meet at a local treatment facility with a dozen other strangers and share the dark details of our most intimate relationships. in this space, we were able to see that while we felt alone dealing with the chaos of our spouse’s active use we weren’t. at all. when the group setting wasn’t enough we’d go out for a girls' night to further spill our tea and gain insight from someone else that had been in the same spot.

this sisterhood continues to grow as we now support each other through the many phases of our lives - marriage, children, and our careers. we navigate how to be our “normal” selves while supporting our loved ones with recovery, how to protect our children, and how to love and care for ourselves when we feel like it least.

in 2019 we launched our podcast, boy problems, where we took the private conversations we were having and shared them with anyone who felt the need to listen. in 2021 we created our sister brand, recovering too - which is how we’ll continue to expand our community to others feeling alone in this journey. we know the special bond that can form from asking for a hand. we’d love to lend one to you. we’re recovering too.

katie mchone-jones

co-founder, brand warrior

when katie discovered the craziness she’d been experiencing was because her husband had been abusing substances for the last decade, she was blindsided. not to mention, broke. she had the unique challenge of learning about substance abuse while also learning about the person her spouse was without drugs. now, she and her husband share two adorable children who receive their own token every year on their dad’s sober birthday. in every group, katie brings the spicy, hot fire lines of questioning that lovingly encourages others to think about the hard, but necessary truths. she is always open to talking freely about addiction and the effects it’s caused on her and her life. she’s ready to kick stigma’s ass.

aka: on the podcast katie goes by the name elise - after a childhood friend whose name she secretly always wanted

jessica miller-bock

co-founder, chief geek

jessica’s journey navigating substance abuse started in 2012 when she met her husband, casey. it wasn’t until she began healing she realized substance abuse had been an influence in her life since childhood - starting with her dad. now, as a wife and mother, she continues finding the balance between supporting her spouse’s recovery and taking care of herself (and their little one). she believes there are many paths to recovery and that while the journey can be hard - it can also be beautiful. she’s usually shy and reserved so sharing doesn’t come naturally, but through support groups has learned that the community that comes from sharing is magical and she’s trying to figure out how to bottle that ish up and sell it :)

aka: in the early days of the podcast, jessica goes by her brave, fearless, and confident alter ego - alex.

shannon sullivan

co-founder, social visionary

in 2010 shannon met her partner and their shared love for music, the grateful dead, and traveling shaped their story. that is until about three years later when his addiction came to a boiling point and it became obvious to shannon there was a problem. in true enneagram 6 fashion, she sought help and support from a local family group. through the ups and the downs, shannon is a constant, loyal force and has welcomed many new faces to her family group - including jessica + katie! she’s most excited to share the transformative power that community (and, let’s be honest, therapy) can have on helping us grow and feel empowered.

aka: shannon goes by liz on the earliest episodes of the podcast. it’s her middle name but she’s always thought the name liz was for cool, older gals ;-)
